Beginning Again A Poetryshop R460

I believe that poetry is a primal impulse within us all. I believe we are all capable of it and … that a small, often ignored corner of us yearns to try it (Stephen Fry)
Billy Collins, American poet Laureate, begins a poem with these words:

I wonder how you are going to feel
When you find out
That I wrote this instead of you.
That it was I who go up early
To sit in the kitchen
And mention with a pen
The rain soaked windows…

For many of us poetry was made difficult at school. Yet we can all enjoy reading and writing it. This wordshop is about recovering simplicity and opening ourselves to the joy poetry can bring. We look with beginner’s eyes. Poetry is another way of paying attention, listening and observing the world. With Wordsworth, ‘we see into
the life of things.’ Poetry opens us to our creativity and imagination as we follow the path of metaphor, rhythm, line balance, word choice and cadence. We invite poems to cultivate a sense of belonging.
Venue: 345 Hangklip Rd Pringle Bay (home of Anne-Marie Breytenbach)

Remoulding to the Heart’s Desire
Ah, Love! could thou and I with Fate conspire To grasp this sorry Scheme of Things entire. Would not we shatter it to bits-and then Re-mould it nearer to the Heart’s Desire. (Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam)
We spend quality time with half a dozen poets that seek to reshape, reframe and revision our ‘sorry scheme’ moments and tune them the rhythms of the heart.

4 .Cape Town Tamboerskloof
Your Life, your Movie
Sat 2 Sept 09.30 –16.30 R500
Life is a tragedy viewed close up and a comedy in the long shot (Charlie Chaplain)
Imagine directing your life as a film.

How would you work out the story board/line? How would you start it – with what dramatic sequence? What songs and theme music would you include? The Grateful Dead? Mozart? What visual artist might feature? Frida Kahlo? Marc Chagal? Who would some of the other characters/antagonists be? Memorable meals? Rooms at home or abroad vibrating with energy? Street scenes? How has your world view changed over the years? What symbols carry power for you? How would you represent them? What angles, lighting? What close-ups? How would you use the zoom? Where would you cut certain scenes? And the ending… and rolling credits?
